Getting started
Do I still need SEO if I’m doing GEO?
Yes. Google AI Overviews are assembled from pages that already rank; ChatGPT search draws on Bing’s index; Perplexity retrieves from the live web. A page that doesn’t rank anywhere isn’t in any answer. SEO is the base layer; GEO adds entity consistency, retrievability for AI crawlers and third-party mentions on top of it.

What overlaps
Technical health, crawlability, a clear site structure, authoritative content and a verifiable business are inputs to both. Doing them once, well, serves Google rankings and AI citations at the same time, which is why Citemark sells the two together rather than as separate retainers.
What GEO adds
Three things SEO alone doesn’t require: an entity that agrees with itself across the web, pages structured so a passage can be lifted and quoted, and mentions on the third-party pages each engine already trusts. The term was coined in a 2023 research paper; the practice is now its own discipline.
Which to do first
If you don’t rank for your category at all, SEO comes first and the audit will say so with a timeline. If you rank but aren’t cited, GEO is the missing layer and moves faster. Most Bangalore brands need some of both, weighted by where they are.
