Why isn’t my business mentioned in ChatGPT’s answers?

Usually one of four reasons: your site isn’t indexed in Bing, which ChatGPT search draws on alongside OpenAI’s own crawler; your pages never say, in one liftable sentence, what you do and where; your name, address and profiles disagree across the web; or nobody independent mentions you. An audit shows which one it is.

Reason one: you’re not in Bing’s index

ChatGPT search retrieves through third-party search providers — Microsoft named Bing as the default search experience in ChatGPT in 2023 — plus OpenAI’s own OAI-SearchBot. A page Bing hasn’t indexed is, for practical purposes, invisible to ChatGPT. Many Indian sites have never been submitted to Bing Webmaster Tools.

  • Check: search site:yourdomain.in on bing.com. If nothing comes back, this is the problem.
  • Fix: verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and enable IndexNow so changes reach Bing in minutes.
  • Confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot, and that your host’s firewall isn’t blocking AI crawlers.

Reason two: there’s nothing to quote

An engine builds an answer from passages it can lift whole. A homepage that says “innovation at scale” gives it nothing; a sentence that says “Citemark is a GEO agency in Bengaluru that gets brands cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews” gives it the exact words a buyer’s question contains.

  • The first paragraph under every heading should answer the question the heading asks, in 40–60 words, without needing the paragraph above it.
  • Name the category, the city and the proof (years, numbers, names) in plain words.

Reason three: your entity contradicts itself

Engines cross-check a business across its site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and reviews. Two addresses, three phone numbers, or a founding year that differs between pages lowers confidence, and a low-confidence entity is skipped in favour of one that agrees with itself.

  • One name, one address, one phone number, one founding story — everywhere.
  • Organization or ProfessionalService schema on the site that matches the visible text exactly.

Reason four: nobody independent mentions you

For “best X in Bangalore” prompts, engines lean on third-party pages — lists, directories, review platforms, Reddit threads, news — more than on brand sites. If the only page that calls you the best is yours, the answer will name businesses that other people have written about.

  • Earn mentions on the pages engines already cite for your category: run the prompts, note the sources, approach them.
  • Reviews on Google and the platforms your industry uses are mentions too.

How to find out which one it is

Ask ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity and Google the five questions a buyer would ask about your category, in a fresh session, and record who gets named and which pages are cited. Then check Bing indexing, your entity consistency, and your liftable sentences in that order. Citemark’s free audit does exactly this with screenshots.

The free audit runs the prompts for your category across every engine and shows, screenshot by screenshot, who gets cited — and the three things to fix first.
